Flight
Report:
Launching
The launch is very easy. Just using the "A" lines the
wing simply comes up, without the tendency to overshoot the pilot.
Once above the head and moving forward on the take off run, a small
amount of brake may be used to lift off. The wing is best launched
on the middle trim setting.
Climbing
out
During the climb out the wing remains nicely above the pilot. Even
under full power the wing does not display a tendency to hang back,
and this stability is more noticeable on the faster trim settings.
The brake pressures are light, with a wide range of smooth and progressive
movement. The amount of brake travel naturally reduces with more
thrust, but generally the wing is very tolerant of power.
Pitch
stability
Unlike most paragliding wings the pitch stability improves as the
wing is flown faster, a trait common only to the reflex wing section.
Even in strong thermal conditions the wing remains firmly above
the head of the pilot. This stability is most noticeable when exiting
a high-energy manoeuvre. Recovery to normal flight is instant. With
trims off, on fast, the dampening in pitch is even more dynamic;
it simply cuts through turbulence, with minimum pilot input.
Handling
With such a broad speed range it has been quite a challenge to keep
the control movement and feel consistent. However with some smart
technical innovations we have managed to produce a glider with wicked
handling. The first part of the brake movement induces flat efficient
turns. The wing is very precise. As more movement is applied, the
rate of turn and feedback pressure increases. The wing really starts
to carve the turns. The roll rate can be outstanding, about 0 to
45 degrees in 1.2 seconds. Something that needs getting used to
on the fast trim setting is that the higher air speed means more
energy when entering turns. The pilot's pendulum weight tends to
swing out more, making the wing dive a little. The sharper the turn
the more the effect. By using the opposite brake the energy can
be easily fed back in, giving you a lot of control over the speed
and bank of the turn. The result is smooth loaded precision, stored
energy and a lot of fun. When circling in thermals, the Action is
nicely balanced remaining spirally positive. It does not yaw around
and stays flying on track as if on rails. It is a joy and responds
very well to weight shift.
Landing
The Action has an excellent glide so good planning is required on
approaches. The brakes, light at first, become progressively heavier
over a healthy amount of travel, giving plenty of warning of a stall;
it also has a wide speed range. With trims on slow the wing lands
like any other performance paraglider, Plenty of air speed on approach,
progressive flare, converting speed into lift, till the moment of
touchdown. With landing with the fast trim on, the process of bleeding
off the extra speed to land can take longer and require more space.
In this mode there is a lot of stored energy, so you may find yourself
climbing out again if you aren't that smooth on the controls. Having
said that, the brakes are very powerful and if necessary it can
be unceremoniously mushed in. The last bit of brake travel really
shuts the wing down and slows you up.
Conclusion
The Action is in a completely new class, a next generation of wing.
I think that Action is what paramotoring has been waiting for. It
could even make its mark in gliding flight too. Mike Campbell-Jones
